Sports For The Mentally Handicapped


Wamagana Special Unit” which later became “Allamano Special School” started participating in the Sports for the Mentally Handicapped in 1990. The Sports were then known as “Special Olympics”.


Competition would start at the District Level then Provincial, up to National Level. After Nationals, children who excelled in particular activities would fly for Special Olympics in one of the Countries Abroad. In 1991, Wamagana Special Unit managed to take two children for Special Olympics to Minnesota – U.S.A. These children were Charles King’ori Ndegwa and Luka Nderitu.


In later years, the Special Olympics attracted the interest of many people.In its place another association was formed to carry on with Sports for Mentally handicapped in Kenya. This Organization was known as “Special Schools Sports Association of Kenya” (SSSAK).The participants no longer went beyond Kenya.Sports for the Mentally handicapped include: -

Athletics

  • Throws: Shot put, Javelin & Soft Ball
  • Jumps: Long Jump & High Jump
  • Short and long distance races
  • Relays
  • Walks

Games

  • Handball
  • Volleyball
  • Football

Up to this time Allamano special School has been able to produce a good number of participants in the various sports.
